Road Biking in the Saranac Lake Area

Do you love ripping up the downhills without all of the effort of the climb?  The Adirondacks has plenty of that to offer as well!

Whiteface Mountain- With killer terrain, awesome obstacles, and a gondola to the top, Whiteface Mountain is a great place to ride.  With extreme terrain, proper safety equipment and full-suspension are a must.  Rental gear is available right at the mountain!

Poor Man’s Downhill- This thrilling ride got its name because it used to be a self service way to ride Whiteface without paying for the Gondola Ride.  A two-vehicle effort was needed to take this action packed trail from the Whiteface Memorial Highway all the way down to the Wilmington Flume.  Nowadays, there’s a shuttle during the summer months!  Check out the BETA website for more information about shuttle availability and cost.

Wilmington Pump Track and Dirt Jump Features- Wilmington is about a 40 minute drive from Saranac Lake and is home to Whiteface Mountain.  This little mountain town takes its biking seriously and has a great park with professionally designed features for riders of all ages and ability levels.

Mountain Biking in the Tri-Lakes Area

Through coordinated efforts, the mountain biking scene in the Saranac Lake and Lake Placid areas is growing faster than we can keep up.  It seems like every weekend there’s a trail day and there are new routes opening up all the time!  Here’s our list of suggestions for mountain biking trails and resources in the area:

BETA (Barkeater Trails Alliance)- Barkeater Trails Alliance (BETA) works to develop, maintain, and advocate for a diverse, sustainable and interconnected multi-use trail system suitable for mountain bikes in the Adirondack Tri-Lakes region.  These guys are the ambassadors of the fat tire and have done a great job of developing trail systems, making maps and signage and even setting up a shuttle system for the Poor Man’s Downhill Trail in Wilmington.  Their maps are a necessity if you want to find the best MTB trails around.  www.barkeatertrails.org

Dewey Mountain Recreation Center- Dewey Mountain is famous for bringing up Olympic Nordic Skiiers like Gold Medalist Billy Demong, but with help from BETA, it’s now home to some excellent mountain biking, too!  With novice trails that include smooth sweeping turns in open woods, and awesome man-made and natural obstacles, log rides, rock gardens and burms, the trails here can’t be beaten.  Did we mention that Dewey is just 1/2 mile from Ampersand Bay Resort, so you don’t even have to put the bike in the car- you can hit the trails straight from your vacation rental!

Mount Pisgah Recreation Center- Home to our local ski hill in the winter months, BETA has been hard at work building bike trails.  If you like downhill rides that you have to earn, this is the place to go, there’s an awesome switchback trail to the top with a sweet roller coaster ride down!
