Things to do in the Saranac Lake/Lake Placid Area
The Adirondacks are a destination for people who want to get closer to nature (or maybe just a little farther from the city). Whether you're an avid outdoorsperson, or it's your first time in the mountains, the Adirondacks have amazing choices to fit your experience level. In addition to our excellent on property and family choices, here are some thoughts for some great day trips from Ampersand Bay Resort:
If you're anything like us, no relaxing vacation is complete without an adrenaline pumping, scare-the-pants-off-you, super fun experience. We suggest one of our area whitewater rafting trips, a rock-climbing class, a high speed bobsled experience, or a high-ropes course to get your juices flowing. The experienced and friendly guide services that we have in our region are the best around and can provide an opportunity that fits your family's skill and experience levels perfectly for a safe and enjoyable time.
Whether you prefer to put in long miles on the road, or tear it up on single-track, the Adirondacks are a destination for bicyclists of all kinds. Our local bike shops have put together a number of great loops for road bikers that combine spectacular views, minimal traffic, broad shoulders, and a variety of distances and levels of difficulty. If fat tires are more your style, mountain biking in the region has seen a recent boom with the creation of a new trails association. Riding opportunities are popping up everywhere as a result of an increase in partnerships that combine public and private lands in an effort to create some of the best MTB trails in the North East. A day of mountain biking in the Adirondacks can find you on remote single-track, dirt logging roads, or ripping it up on downhill terrain.
The 1980 Olympics came and went, but the Olympic spirit still holds on tightly to our region. There are dozens of year-round attractions and activities available relating to the Olympic experience. A visit to the ski-jumps to watch the jumpers twist and spin, a gondola ride to the top of Whiteface Mountain, or screaming down the side of a mountain in a bobsled at Mount VanHoevenburg are just a few of the options available to our guests.
What would the Adirondacks be if it weren't for the great lakes and waterways that we have to offer? Choose from a day-trip in a canoe or kayak, SUP yoga, waterskiing lessons, or a boat tour as your preferred method to experience spectacular mountain views and wildlife sightings galore. There are some great paddling guide services, and rental companies as well. Heck, we can even give you the down low on where to find a good old-fashioned rope swing!
Here at the Resort, we can't decide whether a round of golf is more relaxing or frustrating, but we can agree that a day out on the course is a great way to spend a part of your vacation. Our region hosts a number of great golf courses and the scenic mountain ranges surrounding every course in the area make your golf outing breathtaking and loads of fun- regardless of your score!
For a day out with the kids, experiencing the wonders of the Adirondacks at a natural history museum or nature center can help your family dip their toes into the wilderness experience with a guided birding walk, visit to a butterfly house, go for a horseback ride or a float tour. There a several options to get out into the wilderness at a place devoted to combining outdoor adventure and educational experiences for kids and adults alike.
